Volhynian Czechs in western Ukraine

Who are the Volhynian Czechs? Discover the powerful and little-known story of a Czech community that took root in Volhynia (western Ukraine) in the 19th century—and has stood at the crossroads of war, displacement, and identity ever since.

Professor Lyudmyla Chyzhevska, head of the Zhytomyr Association of Volhynian Czechs and the Czech National Council of Ukraine, she shares insights on:

  • 19th-century Czech settlement in Volhynia
  • Their role in WWI and WWII
  • Displacement after the Chernobyl disaster and during recent conflicts
  • The present-day challenges facing this community
