Koudelka: Invasion1968 & archival footage by Jan Nemec

1st September 2018 @ 10:00 am - 8th September 2018 @ 6:00 pm

The National Gallery in Prague is exhibiting photographs by Josef Koudelka of the incursion of the Warsaw Pact troops into Prague, a catastrophe that had a major impact on the fate of the country’s inhabitants. Although he had never engaged in reportage, the pictures he took during several dramatic days in August 1968 have become a symbol of the national tragedy and, more broadly, of any military oppression and fight for freedom. His series of photographs has entered the canon of classic post-war reportage photography.

The exhibition and spatial video installation of Josef Koudelka and his work and the archival footage by film director Jan Nemec are displayed on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the invasion; they are based on the eponymous book, which has been published in twelve languages.

The gallery is closed on Mondays.
