Ecstasy

7th November 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

A special screening of the digital restoration in 4K of Gustav Machatý’s 1933 defiant masterpiece: the UK premiere of this cult classic film.

Probably the most widely seen Czech film of all time, it stirred controversy and uproar due to its portrayal of female nudity and suggestive sexual content and shot its director and the actress Hedy Lamarr to international recognition. Lamarr plays sexually frustrated newlywed Eva whose older husband is interested in anything but her. After returning to her father’s house Eva, while swimming in the lake, meets Adam, a young engineer, and starts an adulterous affair.

Exploring erotic desires and romantic themes already present in his previous films, Machatý teams up with cinematographer Jan Stallich to transform a simple story into a visual feast of passion rich in symbolism, using exquisite compositions, thrilling montage and outstanding exterior photography full of unconventional shots.

Finan Jones conducts the Silk Street Soloists performing a newly commissioned overture by Anna Vöröšová based on the original score by the film composer Giuseppe Becce.
