SUMMARY:Surviving Life: Jan Švankmajer
DESCRIPTION:Extended introduction by Gareth Evans \nEugene leads a double life – married to Milada\, he also dreams of the beautiful Evgenia. Trying to swap his dreary life for a dream life\, he seeks help from a psychoanalyst\, who\, under the disapproving gazes of Freud and Jung framed on her wall\, attempts to interpret his experiences. Also featuring his jealous wife and his super-ego portrayed as a repulsive\, overbearing bag lady\, this icily sarcastic\, surrealist collage about the dark forces of the male subconscious\, combines live action with animated passages. One of Švankmajer’s most light-hearted films and a charming psychological masterpiece uses a combination of striking visuals and an endearing story of love and fantasy that will appeal to lovers of Terry Gilliam and Jan Lenica as well as admirers of his more rigorous explorations. \n\nJan Švankmajer\, Czech Republic 2010\, 104´\nCast: Václav Helšus\, Klára Issová\, Zuzana Kronerová \nGareth Evans is a London-based writer\, editor\, film / event curator and producer\, host and documentary mentor. \n\nTo celebrate the 90th birthday of Jan Švankmajer\, the grand master of Czech animation\, the Czech Centre London has partnered with the ICA and the BFI Southbank to present a selection of his best feature films showcasing  his wide range of animation skills\, innovative storytelling\, and unique artistic vision through screenings of “Surviving Life\,” “Alice\,” and “Little Otik.”

However\, they soon discover it reciprocates their love in an increasingly dysfunctional and aggressive way\, leaving them worrying for anyone or anything that crosses its path. It’s every bit as bizarre as you could hope for\, and never less than a spellbinding curiosity. \nDirector Jan Švankmajer\, Czech Republic\, 2000\, 131min\, 35mm\, English subtitles\, Certificate 15\nWith Veronika Žilková\, Jan Hartl\, Kristina Adamcová \nWednesday 04 September 2024\, 20:15\n+ Introduction by musician and Starve Acre composer Matthew Herbert  \nNFT3\, BFI Southbank \nBuy cinema tickets for Little Otik + intro by musician and Starve Acre composer Matthew Herbert | BFI Southbank \nSaturday 21 September 2024\, 17:45\nNFT2\, BFI Southbank  \nBuy cinema tickets for Little Otik | BFI Southbank \n\nJoint ticket available with either screening of Alice.   \nTo celebrate the 90th birthday of Jan Švankmajer\, the grand master of Czech animation\, the Czech Centre London has partnered with the ICA and the BFI Southbank to present a selection of his best feature films showcasing  his wide range of animation skills\, innovative storytelling\, and unique artistic vision through screenings of “Surviving Life\,” “Alice\,” and “Little Otik.” \n\n

SUMMARY:Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass
DESCRIPTION:For their second consecutive night at the Proms\, Jakub Hrůša and the Czech Philharmonic bring to life the blazing fanfares\, raw outcries and hushed humility of Leoš Janáček’s unparalleled Glagolitic Mass. Inspiration for the work struck the composer in a misty wood. ‘Its moist scent was the incense\,’ he wrote. ‘I felt a cathedral grow out of the giant expanse of woods … Now I hear the voice of each arch-priest in the tenor solo\, a maiden angel in the soprano – and in the choir I hear our people.’ \nExperience the power of Janáček’s galvanising work alongside two other Czech masterpieces\, Dvořák’s fiendish Piano Concerto and a first Proms performance for the Military Sinfonietta by the tragically short-lived Vítězslava Kaprálová\, a sometime pupil of Bohuslav Martinů. \nProgramme \nVítězslava Kaprálová      Military Sinfonietta \nAntonín Dvořák               Piano Concerto in G minor \nLeos Janáček                  Glagolitic Mass \n  \nMao Fujita                       piano \nCorinne Winters            soprano\n\nBella Adamova              mezzo-soprano\n\nDavid Butt Philip           tenor\n\nBrindley Sherratt           bass\n\nChristian Schmitt          organ\n\nThe City of Prague Philharmonic Choir\n  \ntickets go on sale 18 May \nBroadcast live on BBC Radio 3 \nImage: Jakub Hrůša © Petr Chodura

SUMMARY:Czech Philharmonic play Dvořák and Suk
DESCRIPTION:When the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák died\, his protégé and son-in-law Josef Suk wrote three movements of a symphony in his mentor’s memory. Then tragedy struck again: Suk’s wife\, Dvořák’s own daughter\, died too. SUMMARY:Tereza Bušková: Hidden Mothers
DESCRIPTION:This installation features a video and objects created as part of Tereza Bušková’s project Hidden Mothers\, conducted in Birmingham and London from 2019 to 2021. The project aimed to empower women\, especially migrant mothers facing isolation\, drawing inspiration from Victorian photography where mothers hid behind cloths while their infants were photographed. \nIn contemporary society motherhood’s complexities often remain hidden. Bušková aimed to bring mothers out of the margins\, celebrating them through rituals and folklore from various cultures. Her project fostered new connections between the women through participatory workshops like bread and insignia making. It provided a platform for empowerment and solidarity\, encouraging mothers to step out from the shadows and reclaim their importance in society. \nImage: Bušková\, Hidden Mothers\, photograph by Carl Gibbons. \nThis installation is kindly supported by Arts Council England and players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

SUMMARY:Kafka: Making of an Icon
DESCRIPTION:Kafka: Making of an Icon marks the 100th anniversary of the author’s death\, celebrating not only his achievements and creativity but also how he continues to inspire new literary\, theatrical and cinematic creations around the world. \nThis free exhibition features materials from the archives of the Bodleian Libraries\, which hold the majority of Franz Kafka’s papers\, including literary notebooks\, drawings\, diaries\, letters\, postcards\, glossaries\, and photographs. Notably\, the notebooks in the archive include the original manuscripts of two of Kafka’s unfinished novels\, Das Schloss (The Castle) and Der Verschollene (America)\, as well as a number of short stories. \nUsing this rich archive\, the exhibition not only sets Kafka in the context of his life and times but also shows how his own experiences nourished his imagination. His notebooks show how his travels in Western Europe enabled him to practise descriptive writing\, while his readings strengthened his fascination with remote spaces and made him aware of European colonialism. \nThis exhibition is curated by Professor Carolin Duttlinger\, Co-Director of the Oxford Kafka Research Centre; Professor Katrin M. Kohl\, Co-Director of the Oxford Kafka Research Centre; Professor Barry Murnane\, Co-Director of the Oxford Kafka Research Centre; Dr Meindert Peters\, Leverhulme Research Fellow at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages; and Dr Karolina Watroba\, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford. It is supported by Malgorzata Czepiel\, Curator of the Kafka Archive at the Bodleian Libraries \nOpening hours: Mon-Sat 10 am – 5pm\, Sun 11am – 4pm \nTying in with the exhibition\, Bodleian Library Publishing has published Kafka: Making of an Icon (£35). The book is a collection of essays\, illustrated with manuscripts\, archival material\, postcards Kafka wrote to family members\, and family photographs\, that celebrate Kafka’s achievements and creativity. It also shows how – even 100 years after his death – Kafka continues to inspire new literary\, theatrical and cinematic creations around the world.

SUMMARY:Get on the ice! Ice Hockey and Skating in Art
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship\, Prague National Gallery presents an exhibition that opens up the theme of skating and hockey in visual art. Skating on frozen canals\, lakes\, and rivers was popular in 17th- and 18th-century Holland\, and it soon spread to the Czech lands and Prague and became a common winter pastime across social classes.\n\n\n\n\n\nBy the beginning of the 20th century\, people had started to play ice hockey\, the first ice rinks were being built\, and the sport was becoming a part of the national identity. Meanwhile\, it found its way into art and\, for some creators\, provided a free domain for artistic experimentation.\n\nThe exhibition features a number of interesting works from private and institutional collections\, as well as works by contemporary artists\, some of which were created specifically for the occasion. It looks at a topic that has not yet been presented or examined in such a comprehensive way and invites the general public to explore how this sport\, so fundamental for the Czechs\, is reflected in art. The exhibition is accompanied by a Czech and English catalogue.\n\nTuesday – Sunday\, closed on Monday

SUMMARY:New Realisms: the Czechoslovak Scene 1918–1945
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features more than 300 works of art depicting a simple yet modern lifestyle driven by technological advancements\, travel\, communication\, and entertainment. \n\n\nThe works in New Realisms\, featuring well-known artists such as Karel Čapek\, Josef Sudek\, and Otto Gutfreund\, as well as works by lesser-known painters such as Ilona Singer\, depict both the joys and the downsides of life in the city and countryside. The exhibit also showcases the prescient topics of women’s emancipation\, ethnic minorities\, fashion\, and technology via paintings\, sculptures\, photographs\, films\, and advertising. \n\n\n\n\n“The exhibition is unique not only in its new perspective on the interwar era of Czechoslovakia but also in the range and composition of the works. For the very first time\, realistic paintings and photographs\, as well as film\, sculptures\, and advertising from this period\, meet side by side\,” said curator Anna Habánová who\, together with colleagues Ivo Habán and Helena Musilová\, worked for over two years on the large-scale exhibit displaying works by more than 100 artists. \n\n\nThe exhibition is closed on Mondays and open until 8pm on Thursdays. It is located on the second floor of the Municipal Library in Prague. \nThe project will be presented in a modified and expanded version in a double exhibition at the East Slovak Gallery in Košice from October 2024 to February 2025 (mainly themes such as living reality\, portraiture\, still life) and at the Peter Michal Bohúň Gallery in Liptovský Mikuláš (mainly the medium of photography and film with an emphasis on social aspects and propaganda).

SUMMARY:Czech functionalism 1918-1938
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta.\nUnder the motto “catch up and overtake Europe” after the end of WWI\, the newly created state – Czechoslovakia – began to build its existence. In architecture\, it meant the creation of a new identity based on the tradition of pre-war Czech Cubism and inspired by Bauhaus\, Le Corbusier and Dutch De Stijl\, glowing with optimism and a new way of life. With three centres – Prague\, Brno and Baťa´s Zlín – in which economic and architectural potential was concentrated\, Czechoslovakia soon became one of the now-forgotten foci of international style\, documenting a wide spectrum of various nuances of Functionalism from rationalist to aerodynamic and organic architectural concepts that represent proudly the democracy and humanism of Masaryk’s time. This phenomenon was stopped only by the Nazi occupation and later by the communist dictatorship\, and today it is one of the important components of cultural discourse and heritage.\n\n\n\nProf. Vladimír Šlapeta studied architecture in Prague. From 1973-1991 he was director of the architectural department of the National Technical Museum in Prague and following the Velvet Revolution in 1989 he became Dean of the Faculty of Architecture in Prague and later at VUT in Brno. He was a Fulbright-Masaryk scholar at the Cooper Union in New York and is a member of the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin. He is the author of many exhibitions and books on Central European architecture of 20th century.\n\n\n\nPrice £15 including a glass of wine. To book use the Eventbrite link below.\n\n\n\nReserve a place at www.czechfriends/friends-eventsEnquiries: events@czechfriends.net\n\nAll proceeds raised go towards the care and conservation of Czech heritage.\n\nImages courtesy of the lecturer.
