DESCRIPTION:The University of Chichester Centre for Fairy Tales\, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction hosts an international\, interdisciplinary conference marking the centenary of the first staging in English of Karel Čapek’s seminal play R.U.R. The play saw the first appearance of the term robot which comes from the Czech word robota meaning ‘forced labour’ that has its roots in the Slavic word for ‘slave’. \nThe conference will be opened by the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Simeon Keates\, who is known widely for his research into artificial intelligence\, human-computer interaction\, and building robots\, which led to his competing in the hit BBC show Robot Wars. \nThe conference programme will also feature an innovate Czech project ‘AI: When a Robot Writes a Play’ created by a team of computer scientists and drama experts from THEaiTRE in collaboration with Prague’s Švanda Theatre. \nTickets are £30 on-campus\, £20 online see booking link below \n  \n

Czech / Japanese architect Osamu Okamura and Manijeh Verghese\, Co-curator of the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021\, provide a crash course in urban planning discussing many pressing issues facing current cities from suburbanisation and neglect of public space to the shrinking cities phenomenon\, environmental degradation and the absence of political direction. \nInspired by Okamura’s book City for Everyone\, and using their respective experiences from Prague and London\, Okamura and Verghese share examples of good practice to help us understand what complicated\, tightly packed and fragile organisms cities are and how to make them equitable and liveable. \nOsamu Okamura is an architect\, a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec\, and a member of the Prague City Council Committee for Art in Public Spaces. DESCRIPTION:A chance to see a rarely screened film  directed by Martin Fric and starring Hugo Haas and Adina Mandlova. \nA light hearted romp mainly set in and around a Prague music publishing shop. A young composer falls for the publisher’s daughter but the road to love is complicated when he gains employment at the shop disguised as his uncle. \nHugo Haas was a top star of both theatre and film in his native Czechoslovakia and would later find character roles in Hollywood before becoming a director himself. Adina Mandlova proves delightfully flirty as the love interest and the hi-jinks are kept bubbling along by the experienced Martin Fric who directed more than 100 films between 1929 and 1968. \nDoors open at 18.30\, for a 19.30 start. Login details will be shared only with those who confirm their attendance.\n\nCzech-born British GP\, Dr Eva Hnízdo will introduce her book Diagnosis London\, published in Czech in Prague in 2020\, and her novel Why didn’t they leave?\, which was published in London in English in 2021.\n\nDr Hnízdo was born in Prague in 1953. After studying medicine at Charles University she worked at a Czech hospital and then as a general practitioner in Prague before escaping to the West in 1986. In Britain she worked for 23 years in a Watford practice.\n\nShe wrote ‘Diagnóza Londýn aneb příběhy české doktorky’ (Diagnosis London or the stories of a Czech doctor) in collaboration with Lucie Weissová which compares the Czech and British healthcare systems. Her novel ‘Why didn’t they leave’ is only available in English. A family saga\, it focuses not only on historical circumstances but also on family dynamics\, in particular a mother-daughter relationship\, and the effect the Holocaust had on the next generation.

SUMMARY:The Bourbons and Bohemia
DESCRIPTION:Louis XIV was a life-long enemy of the Holy Roman Emperors\, and Kings of Bohemia\, Leopold I and Charles VI. The armies of his successor Louis XV occupied Prague in 1741.\nThereafter\, however\, the Bourbons became allies of the House of Austria. During the revolution the resort of Teplitz/Teplice in Bohemia became the residence of many emigres including Charles Joseph Prince de Ligne and the Princes de Rohan. The Rohans later lived at Castle Sychrov\, east of Prague\, which still contains 250 Rohan and Bourbon portraits. The most famous French exile in Bohemia was the Bourbon King Charles X\, after the revolution of 1830. He lived at Prague Castle from 1832 to 1835\, when he had to leave as the castle was needed for the coronation of the Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria as Ferdinand V King of Bohemia. The best account of the coronation\, a moment of exceptional harmony between the Czechs and the Habsburgs\, is by the French ambassador the Comte de Sainte -Aulaire.\n\nDr. Philip Mansel\, a historian of France and the Middle East\, has lived in London\, Paris\, Beirut and Istanbul. His books include lives of Louis XVIII (1981) and the Prince de Ligne ( Prince of Europe\, 2003); Dressed to Rule \, a study of the politics of clothes (2005); a history of Paris as capital of nineteenth-century Europe\, Paris between Empires (2001); and most recently King of the World: the life of Louis XIV (2019). He writes for The Spectator\, The Art Newspaper and the Times Literary Supplement and is a founding committee member of the Society for Court Studies.\n\n\nTickets £15 including a glass of wine. DESCRIPTION:Anne of Bohemia\, the eldest daughter of Charles IV\, married King Richard II of England in 1382 at the age of 16 . \nThe speaker will be Dr Shubhankar Reddy\, who will be giving the talk from his home in India\, such is the wonder of Zoom. He is a doctor of medicine who has an interest in history\, and will tell us about this remarkable lady who until her early death joined together the English and Bohemian royal houses. Dr Reddy will also tell us how he has become interested in Anne and in Bohemia. \nAlthough initially unpopular in England (she brought no dowry with her) Anne won people over\, not least by interceding with her husband on several occasions for mercy for people in his disfavour. Unlike many arranged marriages of the period it appears that they came to love each other. \nThe BCSA’s AGM will follow Dr Reddy’s talk\, still on Zoom. The agenda will include the usual items of the Chairman’s annual report\, the Treasurer’s report and accounts for 2021\, and the election of the honorary officers. SUMMARY:Printmaking in Prague: art from the court of Rudolf II
DESCRIPTION:Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II was an avid collector and knowledgeable patron of the arts. \n\nIn this free exhibition (room 90) learn more about printmaking in Rudolf’s court in Prague during the highpoint of innovative and ambitious prints made from around 1580 until the early years of the 17th century. \nAfter moving his court to the Bohemian capital of Prague\, Rudolf transformed the city into a vibrant centre of art and science. He acquired objects from all over Europe and beyond\, and amassed one of the largest and most diverse collections of his time. His collection of thousands of paintings\, prints\, drawings\, sculptures\, and other objects of curiosity and wonder led him to be described as the greatest art patron in the world by biographer Karel van Mander in 1604. \nRudolf also sought out leading artists for his court\, including painters and sculptors who specialised in creating elegant\, elongated forms. Aegidius II Sadeler was appointed as the imperial engraver to Rudolf’s court\, and together with Hendrick Goltzius and Jan Muller\, he reproduced these artworks as prints – a move that disseminated Rudolf’s courtly style to a much broader audience. \nThrough the Museum’s collection of Rudolfine art\, on display for the very first time\, discover more about one of the most varied\, expansive and technically dazzling periods of printmaking history.

DESCRIPTION:The 1950s-70s saw a renaissance in Czech glass design that re-established the Bohemian region’s global reputation in this area. From behind the Iron Curtain\, skilled designers pushed the boundaries of 20th century glass design and produced unique art glass masterpieces that went on to inspire visually stunning\, highly innovative and commercial ranges. Despite this\, the designers responsible were rarely named. Until today\, the designs they produced have been typically forgotten or misattributed. This lecture reveals the work of seven influential designers across cut\, blown and pressed glass\, and considers the economic and political context that affected it. \n\nMark Hill is an antiques and modern design specialist\, an expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow\, and a researcher\, collector\, dealer and published author in postwar Czech Glass. DESCRIPTION:A talk on Zoom by Nina Fořtíková\, a sixteen-year old Prague schoolgirl\, about the attitude of her generation towards Czech political life.  \nShe is not an average Czech teenager; when she was thirteen Nina joined a debating club which required wide reading on political matters.  \nNina submitted an essay Why people prioritise optimism over their freedom to the BCSA writing competition in which she analyses why right-wing nationalist politicians are becoming ever more popular.  \nShe attends one of Prague‘s international schools that teaches in English. Since autumn 2021 Nina has participated in an 18-month Microsoft programme\, Council for Digital Good Europe. SUMMARY:A Castle in Bohemia\, an Austro-Japanese Count\, and the Future of Europe
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM lecture: Martyn Bond\, a former foreign correspondent specialising in European affairs\, will speak about Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi\, better known on the Continent than in Britain. Few anywhere know that the man whom Hitler damned in Mein Kampf as a ‘cosmopolitan bastard’ travelled on a Czechoslovak diplomatic passport for twenty years between the two world wars.\nAs a young intellectual politicised by the Great War\, the Count sent President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk one of his early political articles arguing for better understanding between Czech and German speakers in the new republic. In September he went to see him in Prague and explained to the President his bigger plan for a peaceful union of all the nations of Europe in Pan-Europa\, a forerunner of today’s European Union.\nThe Count was an early pioneer of European unity and played an important role in the history of Central Europe but\, given his and his family’s German-Bohemian background\, is still underrated in the Czech Republic. SUMMARY:A new history of Theresienstadt
DESCRIPTION:What was society like in the Nazi ghettos?  \nA SSEES Study of Central Europe Seminar with Dr Anna Hájková\, University of Warwick\, a free event see booking link below \n\nTerezín\, as it was known in Czech\, or Theresienstadt\, as it was known in German\, was operated by the Nazis between November 1941 and May 1945 as a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews before their deportation for murder in the East. Today\, Theresienstadt is best known for the Nazi propaganda of the International Red Cross visit\, cultural life\, and children. But these aspects explain little what defined the lives of its 140\,000 inmates. The Last Ghetto offers both a modern history of this Central European ghetto and the first in-depth analytical history of a prison society during the Holocaust. In conversation with Professor Eric Gordy (SSEES UCL)\, the author will discuss how can we write a history of enforced society in the Holocaust. The discussion will also address the question of Jewish Councils and the place of Jewish and Holocaust history in wider Central European history.\n\nNote: This event will be delivered in person on UCL campus. Her first book\, The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt\, came out in 2020 with Oxford University Press to popular and academic acclaim. Her article “Sexual Barter in Times of Genocide“ was awarded the Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship in 2013. She is currently working on two projects: a study of transgressive sexuality in the Holocaust\, for which she is writing a trade book on the Neuengamme guard Anneliese Kohlmann\, and queer Holocaust history. Her work on queer history of the Holocaust has been published in Czech\, German\, British\, US American\, and Israeli newspapers\, and was recognized with the Orfeo Iris Award in 2020. She recently guest edited a special issue of German History on “Holocaust\, Sexuality\, Stigma”. Additionally\, she is working on a generational history of Communists in Central Europe.
