SUMMARY:Rusalka
DESCRIPTION:A new production of Dvořák’s opera featuring Natalya Romaniw comes to the Edinburgh International Festival\, with the Philharmonia Orchestra\, Douglas Boyd and Garsington Opera. \nRusalka is the haunting fable of a water sprite who sacrifices everything when she falls in love with a human prince. She enlists the help of a witch\, entering the mortal world and giving up her voice to be with him – only to discover the true cost of love is greater still. Inspired by sources including Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid\, Dvořák’s sensual opera shimmers with glinting orchestral colours. Sound and silence reverberate against each other as soaring romantic melodies sweep through the eerie quiet. Reality and the supernatural collide in luscious evocations of the natural world. \nPerformed in Czech with English supertitles \nsee booking link below \n(photo copyright Clive Barda)

SUMMARY:Farewell Comrade: Theresienstadt music
DESCRIPTION:Music written in the shadow of death\, Theresienstadt 1941-1945. \nWe all know that where words fail music can speak yet it is still remarkable to think that during times of unimaginable horror the musicians held in Theresienstadt were able to garner any creativity at all\, let alone enough to compose works as meaningful and moving as these. However\, they did so to promote survival and signify hope for a better world one that so many of them did not get to see\, and as such\, more so perhaps than with any other music\, it is our duty and privilege to give these works a voice now and long into the future\, so that generations current and future can enjoy them and reflect upon them. \nThis concert features two young artists hand-picked by Julius Drake; BBC New Generation Artist and Kathleen Ferrier Prize winning mezzo soprano Ema Niklovska and multi-award winning baritone Konstantin Krimmel. \nEma Nikolovska mezzo-soprano\nKonstantin Krimmel baritone\nJulius Drake piano \nTHERESIENSTADT COMPOSERS \nIlse Weber Ich wandre durch Theresienstadt | Ade\, Kamerad! | Wiegenlied\nViktor Ullmann Berjoskele from Three Jewish Songs | Five Love Songs of Richarda Huch | Three songs on poems by Friedrich Hölderlin | Three songs on poems by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer | Little Cakewalk\nGideon Klein Wiegenlied\nPavel Haas Four Songs on Chinese Poetry\nAdolf Strauss Ich weiss bestimmt\, ich werd dich wiedersehen!\nCarlo Taube Un niño judío \nsee booking link below \nTerezín memorial photo Richard Mortel

SUMMARY:Extreme (the new norm)
DESCRIPTION:A satirical reflection on the pandemic by the Slovak Theatre in London. \nOne day you are enjoying your favourite ice cream on a family holiday\, the next day you find yourself in a national lockdown. Life is unpredictable and it shapes us to be flexible but over the past two years\, we lived through another level of extremes when we couldn’t rely on what would happen even in the next hour\, let alone a month. Pandemic rules brought contrasting experiences. Some of us were relieved to finally slow down\, the others became frustrated and bored. Some worked even more\, others lived in constant fear. Eventually\, we all became overwhelmed by it all. And with the most recent world events\, it seems that when one crisis passes\, another reveals in an endless circle of life.  \nWe find ourselves constantly living beyond norms and extremes become the new norm. \nSlovak Theatre in London reflects on the biggest event of the past decade\, which globally impacted the life of every individual.  In a colourful collage of scenes and characters\, the play depicts the contrasting situations born during the pandemic\, often based on true events. Through collaborative devising by using physical movements\, music and songs\, the artists explore the patterns of behaviour of the society and individuals in a time of crisis. Moreover\, the performance reaches out to the spectators by direct interaction with the actors\, with its desire to serve as a mirror challenging opinions and calling to new perspectives. Ultimately\, the show\, filled with both seriousness and humour\, offers a collective therapy through art. \nBoth shows are in the Slovak and Czech languages with English subtitles. \nTo book tickets use online link below or telephone box office \nBox Office: 020 7258 2925 \n(10.30am – 6pm\, Monday – Friday\,\n12 noon – 6pm\, Saturday)

SUMMARY:Beginner’s Guide to Urbanism
DESCRIPTION:A crash course in urban planning discussing many pressing issues facing current cities from suburbanisation and neglect of public space. \n Increasing problems of space in urban environments have forced us to realise that solving small-scale building problems does little to improve the quality of life in a city. Czech / Japanese architect Osamu Okamura and Manijeh Verghese\, Co-curator of the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021\, provide a crash course in urban planning discussing many pressing issues facing current cities from suburbanisation and neglect of public space to the shrinking cities phenomenon\, environmental degradation and the absence of political direction. \nInspired by Okamura’s book City for Everyone\, and using their respective experiences from Prague and London\, Okamura and Verghese share examples of good practice to help us understand what complicated\, tightly packed and fragile organisms cities are and how to make them equitable and liveable. \nOsamu Okamura is an architect\, a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec\, and a member of the Prague City Council Committee for Art in Public Spaces. His book City for Everyone: A Manual of Urbanism for Beginners published by Labyrint was awarded the Bologna Ragazzi Award: New Horizons 2021 for the most innovative children’s illustrated book of the year.  \nManijeh Verghese is the Head of Public Engagement at the Architectural Association\, where she is also a Unit Master of Diploma 12\, a seminar leader for the AA Professional Practice for Fifth Year course\, and a member of the Senior Management Team. \nFREE EVENT BUT REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY (see link below) \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with the London Festival of Architecture. \n

SUMMARY:Míla Fürstová: All the Rivers That Flow Through Me
DESCRIPTION:Míla Fürstová’s mid-career retrospective exhibition at the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery charts the course from Míla’s graduation from the Royal Collage of Art\, to her becoming the youngest ever elected Academician at the Royal West of Academy in Bristol\, being collected by the V&A and Her Majesty the Queen\, to her commission by Coldplay and finally the creation of “All the Rivers That Flow Through Me”\, selected from ten thousand artworks to represent the Summer Exhibition online by the Royal Academy of Arts. \nMíla’s works are an intimate portrayal of the human soul explored through the medium of etching\, expressed in a distinctly female voice. The content is inspired by universal and personal mythologies; poetic and often narrative in its nature\, it reads as both contemporary and timeless. \nExhibition opening hours : Tuesday – Friday 10.00- 17.00 \n

SUMMARY:Life is a dog/Život je pes (1933)
DESCRIPTION:A chance to see a rarely screened film  directed by Martin Fric and starring Hugo Haas and Adina Mandlova. \nA light hearted romp mainly set in and around a Prague music publishing shop. A young composer falls for the publisher’s daughter but the road to love is complicated when he gains employment at the shop disguised as his uncle. \nHugo Haas was a top star of both theatre and film in his native Czechoslovakia and would later find character roles in Hollywood before becoming a director himself. Adina Mandlova proves delightfully flirty as the love interest and the hi-jinks are kept bubbling along by the experienced Martin Fric who directed more than 100 films between 1929 and 1968. \nDoors open at 18.30\, for a 19.30 start. Refreshments will be available in the licensed café/bar. \nTickets £8 in advance (see link below) or on the door.

SUMMARY:The Lake

Followed by a drink reception and book signing. \nWinner of the 2017 EU Prize for Literature\, writer Bianca Bellová discusses her highly topical book The Lake with Glen James Brown to celebrate the book’s English-language publication by Parthian Books. \nSet in a fictitious country with references to a past Soviet occupation and presenting a post-apocalyptic future of complete climate collapse\, The Lake is a powerful and touching story of a young boy who fights his way out of a harsh environment as he searches for his mother. In discussing her inspirations\, her experiences growing up in the Eastern Bloc states pre-1989\, her tendency to place her characters into extreme situations and the book’s terrifyingly real parallels with the possible aftermath of war in Ukraine\, Bellová explores her universal story\, which has been translated into twenty languages. \nFree event but registration via Eventbrite (see link below) is necessary

SUMMARY:The Bourbons and Bohemia
DESCRIPTION:Louis XIV was a life-long enemy of the Holy Roman Emperors\, and Kings of Bohemia\, Leopold I and Charles VI. The armies of his successor Louis XV occupied Prague in 1741.\nThereafter\, however\, the Bourbons became allies of the House of Austria. During the revolution the resort of Teplitz/Teplice in Bohemia became the residence of many emigres including Charles Joseph Prince de Ligne and the Princes de Rohan. The Rohans later lived at Castle Sychrov\, east of Prague\, which still contains 250 Rohan and Bourbon portraits. The most famous French exile in Bohemia was the Bourbon King Charles X\, after the revolution of 1830. He lived at Prague Castle from 1832 to 1835\, when he had to leave as the castle was needed for the coronation of the Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria as Ferdinand V King of Bohemia. The best account of the coronation\, a moment of exceptional harmony between the Czechs and the Habsburgs\, is by the French ambassador the Comte de Sainte -Aulaire.\n\nDr. Philip Mansel\, a historian of France and the Middle East\, has lived in London\, Paris\, Beirut and Istanbul. His books include lives of Louis XVIII (1981) and the Prince de Ligne ( Prince of Europe\, 2003); Dressed to Rule \, a study of the politics of clothes (2005); a history of Paris as capital of nineteenth-century Europe\, Paris between Empires (2001); and most recently King of the World: the life of Louis XIV (2019). He writes for The Spectator\, The Art Newspaper and the Times Literary Supplement and is a founding committee member of the Society for Court Studies.\n\n\nTickets £15 including a glass of wine. SUMMARY:Anne of Bohemia
DESCRIPTION:Anne of Bohemia\, the eldest daughter of Charles IV\, married King Richard II of England in 1382 at the age of 16 . \nThe speaker will be Dr Shubhankar Reddy\, who will be giving the talk from his home in India\, such is the wonder of Zoom. He is a doctor of medicine who has an interest in history\, and will tell us about this remarkable lady who until her early death joined together the English and Bohemian royal houses. Dr Reddy will also tell us how he has become interested in Anne and in Bohemia. \nAlthough initially unpopular in England (she brought no dowry with her) Anne won people over\, not least by interceding with her husband on several occasions for mercy for people in his disfavour. Unlike many arranged marriages of the period it appears that they came to love each other. \nThe BCSA’s AGM will follow Dr Reddy’s talk\, still on Zoom. The agenda will include the usual items of the Chairman’s annual report\, the Treasurer’s report and accounts for 2021\, and the election of the honorary officers. All members are welcome to attend. \nTo register e-mail bcsa@bcsa.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Printmaking in Prague: art from the court of Rudolf II
DESCRIPTION:Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II was an avid collector and knowledgeable patron of the arts. \n\nIn this free exhibition (room 90) learn more about printmaking in Rudolf’s court in Prague during the highpoint of innovative and ambitious prints made from around 1580 until the early years of the 17th century. \nAfter moving his court to the Bohemian capital of Prague\, Rudolf transformed the city into a vibrant centre of art and science. He acquired objects from all over Europe and beyond\, and amassed one of the largest and most diverse collections of his time. His collection of thousands of paintings\, prints\, drawings\, sculptures\, and other objects of curiosity and wonder led him to be described as the greatest art patron in the world by biographer Karel van Mander in 1604. \nRudolf also sought out leading artists for his court\, including painters and sculptors who specialised in creating elegant\, elongated forms. Aegidius II Sadeler was appointed as the imperial engraver to Rudolf’s court\, and together with Hendrick Goltzius and Jan Muller\, he reproduced these artworks as prints – a move that disseminated Rudolf’s courtly style to a much broader audience. \nThrough the Museum’s collection of Rudolfine art\, on display for the very first time\, discover more about one of the most varied\, expansive and technically dazzling periods of printmaking history.

SUMMARY:Czech Philharmonic at the Barbican 2
DESCRIPTION:Close your eyes and you could be in the Bohemian countryside\, with Dvořák’s joyful Eighth Symphony offering colour\, cheer\, and a vision into the pastoral lands of his homeland. In complete contrast\, his countryman Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass sets you off down a path that is mighty\, triumphant and magnificent. \nFor this second of the Czech Philharmonic’s two-concert residency\, the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus lend their vocal pipes to bring you a small but almighty slice of the Czech tradition. And under the guidance Semyon Bychkov\, who’s quietly emerged as a titan of the podium\, you’re in great hands for the return of international orchestras to our stage.

SUMMARY:Czech Philharmonic at the Barbican 1
DESCRIPTION:Smetana’s national epic Má vlast is undisputedly one of music’s most compelling symphonic poems. Pictures may paint a thousand words\, but this is music that paints a thousand pictures; from the wild waters of the mighty Vltava coursing through the Czech landscape to a small village celebration on the outskirts of the Bohemian forests. \n‘I doubt if any other orchestra in the world could play this so naturally and so movingly’ wrote The Arts Desk\, following a deeply moving rendition streamed live from Prague during lockdown last year. And Czech Philharmonic Music Director Semyon Bychkov is ‘the ideal conductor for communicating the immensity of Smetana’s vision’ (Bachtrack). The fact you also get to hear from Yuja Wang in Stravinsky’s neoclassical concerto is just the icing on the cake. \nProgramme\n\nIvor Stravinsky          Concerto for piano and wind instruments    Yuja Wang piano\nBedřich Smetana      Má vlast
