SUMMARY:Lidice Shall Live
DESCRIPTION:This special screening commemorates Sir Barnett Stross and the 80th anniversary of the birth of the “Lidice Shall Live” campaign at the Victoria Hall on September 6th\, 1942. The coal miners of North Staffordshire vowed to donate one day’s pay each week until the end of the War to rebuild the village destroyed by the Germans in June 1942 – the men of the village executed and women and children taken away to concentration camps. The miners raised today’s equivalent of a million pounds and the new Lidice was built near the original village site after the war – to their eternal credit.\nChatterley Whitfield mining museum has unveiled a new memorial to Lidice and the North Staffordshire miners in the presence of the Vice President of the Czech Republic on the same day that commemorations were happening in Lidice itself in June. There is film of this event – and archive newsreel footage of the original September 1942 event to launch the “Lidice Shall Live” campaign. \nSeveral years ago a group who survived as children came here to North Staffordshire.  Ray Johnson of Staffordshire Film Archive filmed them talking to children in local schools\, and their personal memories are captured on video in Inspired Video’s film “Lidice: A Light Across the Sea”\, which is included in the screening. \nThere will be contributions from the “Lidice Lives” group and local mining heritage representatives. \nFree admission. Book via museum website – see link below

SUMMARY:Pavel Haas Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Czech ensemble the Pavel Haas Quartet counts among classical music’s most distinctive chamber groups. It has a particular passion for the music of central Europe\, but its repertoire stretches across boundaries and times. \nFollowing the breezy wit of Haydn’s sunny G major Quartet\, Op 76 No 1\, the Pavel Haas players perform the 1947 Quartet No 7 by their compatriot Martinů. With its glowing harmonies and bristling rhythms\, it’s a full-blooded celebration of his Czech homeland\, written after the composer had fled Nazi persecution for the USA. \nThe Quartet concludes its recital with what many consider one of the greatest chamber works ever written. Schubert’s G major Quartet\, D887\, is music on a symphonic scale\, a vast musical panorama of transcendental visions and melodies. \nHaydn String Quartet in G Op 76 No 1\nMartinů String Quartet No 7 Concerto da Camera\nSchubert String Quartet in G D887 \nsee booking link below

SUMMARY:Czech Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:Among the world’s most immediately distinctive and recognisable orchestras\, the Czech Philharmonic is defined by its rich\, individualistic playing that has shaped more than a century of unparalleled performances. Semyon Bychkov has been Chief Conductor and Music Director since 2018. \n\nIn the second of their two concerts at the 2022 Edinburgh International Festival\, Bychkov and the orchestra present a symphonic masterpiece that the Czech Philharmonic itself premiered in Prague in 1908. \nMahler’s Seventh Symphony is one of the composer’s most daring works\, a haunting journey that immerses you amid ghostly apparitions and magical nocturnal sounds of the natural world – before a riotous\, life-affirming finale. \nsee booking link below

SUMMARY:Dvořák\, Martinů & Janáček
DESCRIPTION:For the first event in their two-concert residency at the 2022 International Festival\, the Czech Philharmonic and Music Director Semyon Bychkov draw on the orchestra’s own eminent history to bring together richly flavoured music from their Czech homeland. No other ensemble can perform this music with the same power\, authenticity or sheer delight. \nDvořák offers carefree memories of boisterous Bohemian celebrations in his joyful Carnival Overture. Dazzling pianist sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque are the soloists in the jazz-infused Concerto for Two Pianos by Dvořák’s compatriot Martinů\, which looks back affectionately to the concertos of Bach and Vivaldi while setting feet tapping with its infectious rhythms. \nFour eminent vocal soloists and the massed voices of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus join the orchestra for Janáček’s visionary Glagolitic Mass\, a passionate paean to the wonders of Bohemian nature as much as a spiritual hymn of praise. \nDvořák Carnival Overture\nMartinů Concerto for Two Pianos\nJanáček Glagolitic Mass (sung in Old Slavonic with English supertitles) \nsee booking link below \n

SUMMARY:107 Mothers (Cenzorka)
DESCRIPTION:A visually compelling film about women living and working in a Ukrainian prison\, 107 Mothers opens with the piercing screams of a mother and her child. Leysa (Maryna Klimova)\, a new inmate\, is giving birth in a dour hospital room under the soft\, watchful gaze of Iryna (Iryna Kiryazeva)\, the prison’s ward. The relationship between these two women\, teeming with anxiety\, suspicion and\, eventually\, an understated mutual respect\, becomes the focal point of this quiet docufiction. \nDirected by Peter Kerekes  107 Mothers pulls its material from the real-life stories of incarcerated women living at Odessa Correctional Facility Number 74\, one of two in Ukrainian prisons where pregnant women can serve their sentences with their children. The brutal terms and conditions state\, though\, that after the child turns 3\, they will be sent to an orphanage and forever separated from their mother. If a woman is lucky and her sentence ends around the child’s third birthday\, she can apply for parole. \nTwo screenings at the Edinburgh International Film Festival see booking link below \nFriday 19th August at 20.30\, Everyman Cinema \nSaturday 20th August at 14.40\, Filmhouse Cinema 3 \n

SUMMARY:Rusalka
DESCRIPTION:A new production of Dvořák’s opera featuring Natalya Romaniw comes to the Edinburgh International Festival\, with the Philharmonia Orchestra\, Douglas Boyd and Garsington Opera. \nRusalka is the haunting fable of a water sprite who sacrifices everything when she falls in love with a human prince. She enlists the help of a witch\, entering the mortal world and giving up her voice to be with him – only to discover the true cost of love is greater still. Inspired by sources including Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid\, Dvořák’s sensual opera shimmers with glinting orchestral colours. Sound and silence reverberate against each other as soaring romantic melodies sweep through the eerie quiet. Reality and the supernatural collide in luscious evocations of the natural world. \nPerformed in Czech with English supertitles \nsee booking link below \n(photo copyright Clive Barda)

SUMMARY:Farewell Comrade: Theresienstadt music
DESCRIPTION:Music written in the shadow of death\, Theresienstadt 1941-1945. \nWe all know that where words fail music can speak yet it is still remarkable to think that during times of unimaginable horror the musicians held in Theresienstadt were able to garner any creativity at all\, let alone enough to compose works as meaningful and moving as these. However\, they did so to promote survival and signify hope for a better world one that so many of them did not get to see\, and as such\, more so perhaps than with any other music\, it is our duty and privilege to give these works a voice now and long into the future\, so that generations current and future can enjoy them and reflect upon them. \nThis concert features two young artists hand-picked by Julius Drake; BBC New Generation Artist and Kathleen Ferrier Prize winning mezzo soprano Ema Niklovska and multi-award winning baritone Konstantin Krimmel. \nEma Nikolovska mezzo-soprano\nKonstantin Krimmel baritone\nJulius Drake piano \nTHERESIENSTADT COMPOSERS \nIlse Weber Ich wandre durch Theresienstadt | Ade\, Kamerad! | Wiegenlied\nViktor Ullmann Berjoskele from Three Jewish Songs | Five Love Songs of Richarda Huch | Three songs on poems by Friedrich Hölderlin | Three songs on poems by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer | Little Cakewalk\nGideon Klein Wiegenlied\nPavel Haas Four Songs on Chinese Poetry\nAdolf Strauss Ich weiss bestimmt\, ich werd dich wiedersehen!\nCarlo Taube Un niño judío \nsee booking link below \nTerezín memorial photo Richard Mortel

SUMMARY:Extreme (the new norm)
DESCRIPTION:A satirical reflection on the pandemic by the Slovak Theatre in London. \nOne day you are enjoying your favourite ice cream on a family holiday\, the next day you find yourself in a national lockdown. Life is unpredictable and it shapes us to be flexible but over the past two years\, we lived through another level of extremes when we couldn’t rely on what would happen even in the next hour\, let alone a month. Pandemic rules brought contrasting experiences. Some of us were relieved to finally slow down\, the others became frustrated and bored. Some worked even more\, others lived in constant fear. Eventually\, we all became overwhelmed by it all. And with the most recent world events\, it seems that when one crisis passes\, another reveals in an endless circle of life.  \nWe find ourselves constantly living beyond norms and extremes become the new norm. \nSlovak Theatre in London reflects on the biggest event of the past decade\, which globally impacted the life of every individual.  In a colourful collage of scenes and characters\, the play depicts the contrasting situations born during the pandemic\, often based on true events. Through collaborative devising by using physical movements\, music and songs\, the artists explore the patterns of behaviour of the society and individuals in a time of crisis. Moreover\, the performance reaches out to the spectators by direct interaction with the actors\, with its desire to serve as a mirror challenging opinions and calling to new perspectives. Ultimately\, the show\, filled with both seriousness and humour\, offers a collective therapy through art. \nBoth shows are in the Slovak and Czech languages with English subtitles. \nTo book tickets use online link below or telephone box office \nBox Office: 020 7258 2925 \n(10.30am – 6pm\, Monday – Friday\,\n12 noon – 6pm\, Saturday)

SUMMARY:Beginner’s Guide to Urbanism
DESCRIPTION:A crash course in urban planning discussing many pressing issues facing current cities from suburbanisation and neglect of public space. \n Increasing problems of space in urban environments have forced us to realise that solving small-scale building problems does little to improve the quality of life in a city. Czech / Japanese architect Osamu Okamura and Manijeh Verghese\, Co-curator of the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021\, provide a crash course in urban planning discussing many pressing issues facing current cities from suburbanisation and neglect of public space to the shrinking cities phenomenon\, environmental degradation and the absence of political direction. \nInspired by Okamura’s book City for Everyone\, and using their respective experiences from Prague and London\, Okamura and Verghese share examples of good practice to help us understand what complicated\, tightly packed and fragile organisms cities are and how to make them equitable and liveable. \nOsamu Okamura is an architect\, a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec\, and a member of the Prague City Council Committee for Art in Public Spaces. His book City for Everyone: A Manual of Urbanism for Beginners published by Labyrint was awarded the Bologna Ragazzi Award: New Horizons 2021 for the most innovative children’s illustrated book of the year.  \nManijeh Verghese is the Head of Public Engagement at the Architectural Association\, where she is also a Unit Master of Diploma 12\, a seminar leader for the AA Professional Practice for Fifth Year course\, and a member of the Senior Management Team. \nFREE EVENT BUT REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY (see link below) \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with the London Festival of Architecture. \n
