Agata’s decision to look for her surviving relatives quickly turns from excitement to obsession\, but as she gets closer to unearthing long-buried secrets\, her search threatens to tear apart not only the family she already has\, but her own identity too. Drawing on her acute understanding of human psychology\, as well as her own life story\, Anna Fodorova tells a compelling and moving tale of one woman’s search for the truth. DESCRIPTION:Session III: The Spectre of Dissent Still Haunts Europe\n\nIn his essay The Power of the Powerless\, Havel famously asked: What role does dissent play in society? What are its hopes? Can dissidents actually change anything? Though focusing on the power and the powerless in communist Europe in the 1970s\, Havel’s distinction between the forces of life and the system’s power also calls for re-thinking democratic politics\, civil society and human rights. It is no coincidence that the essay inspired students and young revolutionaries during the Arab Spring a decade ago and continues to be read by dissidents and civil rights activists around the globe because it asks the most fundamental questions regarding the ethics in politics and life in general. Havel argued that the crisis of ‘mass civilisation’ is the moral crisis of ‘human identity’ and called for ‘living in truth’ and ‘an existential revolution’ as a response to this crisis of civilisation beyond different political systems. The Ukraine War has been the most recent evidence of this crisis. In his essay ‘Our Moral Footprint’\, Havel suggested rethinking our sojourn on earth as a loan and consider our modern civilisation’s past as running up a debt. As he wrote in 2007: ‘Nature is issuing warnings that we must not only stop the debt from growing but start to pay it back.’ The climate change and growing state of environmental emergency confront us with urgent questions of sustainable development\, environmental justice\, rights and inequalities as well as calls for global political actions and activism to tackle grave risks an danger to the humankind of this planetary civilisation. DESCRIPTION:Session I: From Normalization to Loss of Norms: Václav Havel and the Forms of Democratic Backsliding\nThe decades following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 were dubbed the period of ‘Normalization’: a chilling term intended to designate a return to the efficient social controls that had been the norm across the Soviet Bloc prior to the democratizing and liberalizing movement that culminated in the Prague Spring in mid-1968. ‘Normalization’\, in fact\, was not normal at all. Rather it shut down social\, political\, and economic activities that showed any independence or strayed too far from strict Party line. The decade leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 does not yet have a commonly accepted label\, but surely one of the prime political characteristics—almost uniformly across the globe—has been the loss of political norms and the rise of a politics of impudence\, where nothing matters beyond the accumulation of power and resources for elite social groups. Havel’s contrast between living in truth and politics of normalisation informs authoritarian and democratic regimes and destructive ‘new normalities’ are typical of the Brexit\, Trump and Putin with his disinformation wars preceding the aggressive war against Ukraine. This panel will discuss similarities and differences in these related social dynamics—imposition of restrictive norms\, and the elimination of all social and political norms—and how Havel’s writings help us to think through these questions. \nSpeakers:\nJiří Pehe (NYU/Prague)\nMagda Leichtová (Oxford)\nLenka Buštíková (TBC) \nModerator:\nJiří Přibán \nSession II: Totalitarianism\, Pre-\, Post-\, and Neo- George Orwell\, Hannah Arendt and Václav Havel\nIn his most famous political essay\, titled ‘The Power of the Powerless’\, Havel described the ‘Normalization’-era Czechoslovakia in which he found himself as ‘post-totalitarian’—a phrase that may surprise many readers today who are familiar with the neo-Stalinist practices of the regime Havel wrote to oppose. Havel’s point\, however\, was that Normalization entailed a form of authoritarian control in which even those in power no longer believed in the aims they claimed to pursue\, but simply went through the motions in automatized\, mechanical fashion. Orwell and Arendt’s ground breaking analyses of earlier\, ‘classical’ forms of totalitarianism\, composed in the 1940s and 1950s in the shadow or aftermath of Nazi and Stalinist abominations\, focused on the manipulation of belief and the manufacture of misguided ‘faith’. Havel\, on the other hand\, explores the transformation of totalitarianism into a system beyond belief which operates on the basis of empty public rituals and ideological lies traded for the minimum of private autonomy and comfort. SUMMARY:Czech aristocracy and their castles
DESCRIPTION:A guide to the development of the ownership of historic houses in Czech lands since 1918.  \nFrom the formation of Czechoslovakia\, when the first president T.G. Masaryk abolished aristocratic titles\, and his land reform deprived many estates of their main source of income\, the lecture will cover every stage of the turbulent events that changed the ownership of historic properties. In 1938\, after the Munich Agreement\, the Czech aristocracy declared its allegiance to President Beneš\, but the Nazi occupiers demanded a declaration of German nationality in order to avoid confiscation. Some properties were returned to their owners in 1945\, but communist confiscations after February 1948 brought in a completely new\, state system of ownership. Restitution laws after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 have created a variety of ownerships in the new democracy – state and municipal\, and private. \nMilan Svoboda has long experience of managing state-owned castles and châteaux in addition to working for the private heritage sector. He has worked on the transfer of properties and collections to their original owners. He is a historian and former Deputy Director of the National Heritage Institute. To register see link below (registration closes 12 September) \nThe Czech runner Emil Zátopek has been known around the world for his many athletic achievements and records\, including his first two Olympic medals from London in 1948 and his brilliant Olympic gold hat-trick on all long distance runs and the marathon in Helsinki in 1952\, which is yet to be exceeded. Besides his athletic accomplishments\, Zátopek also received international acclaim for his vocal public condemnation of the 1968 Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia which led to his denouncement by the communist government and a controlled detention in countryside away from his Prague home. His moral stance in face of a military aggression sadly remains extremely relevant more than half a century later. \nThe aim of the Zátopek Athletic Fellowship is to support and ignite the sporting and personal attributes that Zátopek represented in young\, talented athletes that strive to follow in his footsteps and will further contribute to advance their athletic careers. \nProceeds from the starting fees as well as all voluntary contributions towards the Emil Zátopek Run will be donated to support the Fellowships.  \nAfter the run there will be a medal ceremony to award the winners\, followed by an informal gathering at the Linford Christie Athletic Stadium to celebrate Zátopek’s anniversary. DESCRIPTION:This special screening commemorates Sir Barnett Stross and the 80th anniversary of the birth of the “Lidice Shall Live” campaign at the Victoria Hall on September 6th\, 1942. The coal miners of North Staffordshire vowed to donate one day’s pay each week until the end of the War to rebuild the village destroyed by the Germans in June 1942 – the men of the village executed and women and children taken away to concentration camps. The miners raised today’s equivalent of a million pounds and the new Lidice was built near the original village site after the war – to their eternal credit.\nChatterley Whitfield mining museum has unveiled a new memorial to Lidice and the North Staffordshire miners in the presence of the Vice President of the Czech Republic on the same day that commemorations were happening in Lidice itself in June. There is film of this event – and archive newsreel footage of the original September 1942 event to launch the “Lidice Shall Live” campaign. \nSeveral years ago a group who survived as children came here to North Staffordshire.  Ray Johnson of Staffordshire Film Archive filmed them talking to children in local schools\, and their personal memories are captured on video in Inspired Video’s film “Lidice: A Light Across the Sea”\, which is included in the screening. \nThere will be contributions from the “Lidice Lives” group and local mining heritage representatives. \nFree admission. She has written four poetry collections Ludwig (1999)\, Není nutné\, abyste mě navštěvoval (There Is No Need for You to Visit Me\, 2001)\, Popel a slast (Ashes and Bliss\, 2004)\, Chůze po dunách (Walking on Dunes\, 2013)\, a collection of interlinked short stories called Noci\, noci (Nights\, Nights\, 2004). Her short novel Amáliina nehybnost (Amalia´s Inertia\, 2021) was nominated for The Magnesia Litera Award 2022. In 2003\, she received the German Hubert Burda Award for young Eastern European poets. Her theatre play Niekur was awarded the Alfred Radok Award in 2006 and was staged in Prague in 2008. In 2007\, she won a residency for international playwrights at the Royal Court Theatre in London. In 2014\, her poetry collection Chůze po dunách was awarded the Magnesia Litera Award\, her short novel Amáliina nehybnost got the Literary Award of a weekly Reflex in 2021 and was nominated for The Magnesia Litera Award 2022. Her plays have been translated and staged in various countries. Selections of her poetry have been published in Austria\, Serbia\, Greece\, and the United Kingdom. \nMilan Děžinský (1974) is a Czech poet and translator\, the author of seven collections of poetry. DESCRIPTION:A satirical reflection on the pandemic by the Slovak Theatre in London. \n​One day you are enjoying your favourite ice cream on a family holiday\, the next day you find yourself in a national lockdown. Life is unpredictable and it shapes us to be flexible but over the past two years\, we lived through another level of extremes when we couldn’t rely on what would happen even in the next hour\, let alone a month. Pandemic rules brought contrasting experiences. Some of us were relieved to finally slow down\, the others became frustrated and bored. Some worked even more\, others lived in constant fear. Eventually\, we all became overwhelmed by it all. And with the most recent world events\, it seems that when one crisis passes\, another reveals in an endless circle of life.  \nWe find ourselves constantly living beyond norms and extremes become the new norm. \nSlovak Theatre in London reflects on the biggest event of the past decade\, which globally impacted the life of every individual.  In a colourful collage of scenes and characters\, the play depicts the contrasting situations born during the pandemic\, often based on true events. Through collaborative devising by using physical movements\, music and songs\, the artists explore the patterns of behaviour of the society and individuals in a time of crisis. Moreover\, the performance reaches out to the spectators by direct interaction with the actors\, with its desire to serve as a mirror challenging opinions and calling to new perspectives.
