SUMMARY:Jáchym Topol
DESCRIPTION:The European Writers’ Festival returns this May\, bringing together leading and emerging writers from 26 countries for a weekend of discussions on literature\, translation and the challenges shaping Europe today. \nAmong the featured authors is Jáchym Topol\, one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Czech literature. His works – including City Sister Silver\, The Devil’s Workshop and A Sensitive Man\, as well as his latest novel Hell Does Not Exist (Peklo neexistuje) – blend myth\, history and dark humour to explore the complexities of Central and Eastern Europe. He is a recipient of the Czech State Prize for Literature and works at the Václav Havel Library in Prague. \nTopol will appear on the panel “Stranger Things” (Sunday 17 May\, 15.00–16.15)\, alongside Anne-Marie Reuter and Sara Stridsberg. The discussion brings together three established writers known for bold\, unconventional storytelling\, exploring the boundaries between reality\, fiction and imagination. \nOrganised by EUNIC London in partnership with the British Library and the European Literature Network\, the festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the richness of contemporary European writing. \nTickets available for in person or online attendance see link below

DESCRIPTION:  Dvořák’s Symphony No 9 From the New World introduced by the performers\, with screens in the hall to bring you closer to the action. Kick-start your evening with a 60-minute Half Six Fix concert with the London Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nWritten during his years as director of America’s National Conservatory of Music in the 1890s\, Dvořák’s homage to the US draws on spirituals and Native American inspiration\, but with the folk music of his Czech homeland never far away. Rhythmically exciting and richly melodic\, the third movement features one of classical music’s most enduring and endearing tunes. \nPresenting and conducting tonight’s concert is Anja Bihlmaier\, a German conductor who for the past few years has been making waves on the UK orchestral and operatic scene.

SUMMARY:Janáček's The Makropulos Affair
DESCRIPTION:A 300-year-old woman confronts mortality\, identity and lost love in this concert performance of Janáček’s intense operatic drama. \n\n\n\n\nThe Makropoulos Affair contains some of Janáček’s most compelling music\, starting with its Prelude that hints at the 16th-century birth year of Emilia Marty\, complete with pounding timpani and fanfares. From there\, Janáček spins a taut drama culminating in a heartbreaking scene as Emilia finally confesses to her identity. \nThis is the fourth Janáček opera performed by Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. This year’s cast is as exceptional as ever\, with soprano Marlis Petersen as the emotionally complex Emilia\, and tenor Aleš Briscein – a veteran of Janáček’s distinctive musical style – as Albert Gregor\, the young lawyer enamoured with Emilia. \n  \nTuesday 13 & Thursday 15 January\, 7-9.05pm\, no interval

SUMMARY:Semafor: Pop Culture in Prague’s 1960s
DESCRIPTION:Bursting into the 1960s with wit\, charm\, and a rebellious spirit\, Prague’s Semafor Theatre became a beacon of creativity behind the Iron Curtain. The unforgettable duo of Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr brought Czechoslovakia its first wave of modern pop\, offbeat humour\, and a form of rebellion that spoke a language different from that of official power and the media. Their songs became the soundtrack of a generation and a symbol of cultural resistance. \n In this special event\, music historian and author of Suchý & Šlitr\, Semafor 1959–1969\, Pavel Klusák\, and Jiří Šlitr’s daughter\, Dominika Křesťanová\, share stories\, rare insights\, and the cultural legacy of a duo who defined an era\, and the rebellion that stole a language for its own game. \n\nThis event also marks the recent release of Pavel Klusák’s book Suchý a Šlitr: Semafor 1959–1969 (Host\, 2024\, 456 pages\, ISBN 978-80-275-1813-5)\, which explores the rise of Semafor and its cultural impact during a decade of change. The book\, awarded the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize for non-fiction\, offers a vivid portrait of the duo’s creative world and their lasting influence on Czechoslovak popular culture. \nAdmission: £7 (+ Eventbrite fee) see booking link below  \nPart of 29th Made in Prague Festival / Czech Centre London \n

SUMMARY:The Makropolus Case
DESCRIPTION:Composed between 1923 and 1925\, The Makropulos Case (or The Makropulos Affair) is characterised by its unique\, modernist musical style that aligns closely with the opera’s dark and philosophical themes. Janáček’s score employs short and repetitive motifs that mirror the psychological tension and emotional complexity of the opera’s characters. Marked by sharp contrasts\, rhythmic irregularities and unexpected harmonies\, the music creates a soundscape that feels both unsettling and captivating – a synthesis that defines the mysterious character of Emilia Marty. Janáček’s innovative use of speech melodies – melodic lines that mimic the natural inflections of spoken language – contribute to the opera’s intense realism\, making the emotions of each character feel vivid and immediate. Speech melody can be found in much of Janáček’s other operas\, including his earlier-composed Jenůfa. \n\n\n\n\nEmilia Marty\, a famous and mysterious opera singer\, has lived for over 300 years thanks to an elixir of immortality. But when she becomes entangled in a battle to obtain a crucial document that will help her renew the life-extending formula\, she begins to grapple with the emptiness and isolation her centuries-long existence has brought her. \nIn its first-ever staging with The Royal Opera\, Janáček’s haunting and enigmatic masterpiece is reimagined through a contemporary lens by Katie Mitchell\, who explores what it means to love\, and at what cost. Ausrine Stundyte makes a welcome return to the house to sing the mysterious Emilia Marty\, whose immortality is both a gift and a curse. Music Director of The Royal Opera Jakub Hrůša conducts. \ngeneral booking opens 2 July 2025

When Czech gunner Student is gravely injured during an attack on Nuremberg\, the crew confronts the human cost of war. Featuring authentic aerial footage and a haunting score\, including Ghost Riders in the Sky\, the film is both a thrilling and deeply personal portrayal of wartime aviation. Banned after the 1968 Soviet invasion\, it remains a striking tribute to unsung RAF heroes. \nEcce Homo Homolka\nJaroslav Papoušek\, Czechoslovakia 1969\, 83‘\, English subtitles\nCast: Josef Šebánek\, Marie Motlová\, František Husák\, Helena Růžičková\, Petr a Matěj Formanovi  \nThe final gem of the Czechoslovak New Wave\, Jaroslav Papoušek’s comedy\, follows a single summer day with the Homolka family: grandparents\, their son Ludva\, daughter-in-law Heduš\, and twin grandchildren. What begins as a simple countryside outing descends into chaos\, exposing petty quarrels and the absurdities of everyday life in 1960s Czechoslovakia. Papoušek’s razor-sharp wit\, keen social observation\, and mastery of situational humour bring these unforgettable characters to life\, while the mischievous Forman twins add lively spontaneity. Brimming with iconic dialogue\, comedic brilliance\, and subtle satire\, the film remains a timeless portrait of family\, materialism\, and human folly. \nThe White Disease\nHugo Haas\, Czechoslovakia 1937\, 105´\, English subtitles\nCast: Hugo Haas\, Zdeněk Štěpánek\, Karla Olicová\, Václav Vydra Sr. \nBased on Karel Čapek’s visionary play\, White Disease (1937) tells of a mysterious plague sweeping the world\, sparing no one—rich or poor. Only one man\, Dr. Galén\, holds the cure— but he will release it only if the leaders renounce war. His ultimatum collides with a ruthless dictator preparing for invasion\,— a thinly veiled portrait of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Banned in Czechoslovakia after the 1938 Munich Agreement\, the film remains uncannily relevant today: a tense thought-provoking parable where deadly disease and the lust for power intertwine. A forgotten classic that resonates as urgently now as on the eve of World War II. \n\n  \nPart of 29th Made in Prague Festival / Czech Centre London \n

SUMMARY:Echoes of Exile
DESCRIPTION:A Family’s Odyssey through the Holocaust and Cold War \nJoin us for a compelling evening with historian and anthropologist Daniela Grollová Spenser\, as she discusses her new book Echoes of Exile: A Family’s Odyssey through the Holocaust and Cold War. \nBlending personal history with political insight\, Spenser traces three generations of her family across some of the most turbulent chapters of the 20th century: from the devastation of the Holocaust and wartime imprisonment\, through the vibrant intellectual and political life of 1960s Czechoslovakia\, to the trauma of exile after the 1968 Soviet invasion. At the heart of the story are her mother\, translator Ruth Tosková\, and her stepfather\, editor and journalist Vladimír Tosek\, whose lives intertwined with prominent figures such as Jiří Pelikán and the émigré journal Listy. \nThe book—published in Czech by Argo (2025) and in English by the University of Alabama Press (2025)—offers a deeply human perspective on survival\, displacement\, and the shifting relationship between political exiles and Czech society after 1989. \nThe conversation will be chaired by Jana Burešová and will open a window into how private lives intersect with history on a global scale. \nAbout the author:\nDaniela Spenser is a fellow at CIESAS (Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social) in Mexico City. She is also the author of The Impossible Triangle: Mexico\, Soviet Russia\, and the United States in the 1920sand Stumbling Its Way Through Mexico: The Early Years of the Communist International. \nSupported by the BCSA. \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) see booking link below

SUMMARY:Sparks of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Sparks of Freedom (Paprsky svobody) — that is the name of a new exhibition at Brno’s Moravian Museum. It tells how British academics and intellectuals reached across the Iron Curtain to support Czech dissidents in the 1980s\, focusing on the work of the Jan Hus Educational Foundation and the quiet acts of courage that helped keep independent thought alive under communist rule. \nThe curators of the Department of the History of Culture with an Anti-Totalitarian Focus (LINK) present the story of solidarity between the British and Brno people. Its roots date back to 1980\, when an organization called the Jan Hus Educational Foundation was established in Oxford\, which systematically provided material and intellectual support to Czechoslovak dissidents. In Brno\, co-operation began in 1981; in December 1984 the first seminar was held\, and mutual cooperation lasted without interruption until the Velvet Revolution. In 1990\, the Czechoslovak Jan Hus Educational Foundation was established in Brno\, which continues its activities under the name of the Vzdělávací nadace Jana Husa to this day. \nThe focuses on Brno events over five years in the second half of the 1980s. It presents important areas in which the British provided material and intellectual assistance to the unofficial cultural world in Brno. Thanks to the Jan Hus Educational Foundation\, British academics were able to come and give lectures in private households during the normalization period. The British also helped in the sphere of samizdat\, video projections of banned or unavailable foreign films in Czechoslovakia\, and supported independent Brno artists in the field of music and visual arts. The exhibition and the catalogue present topics that have not yet been given the attention they deserve. They reveal not only the blank spots of Brno’s cultural history\, but also the strong bonds of British-Czech cooperation in the persistent search for freedom. \nFor the full story see How Oxford philosophers supported Czech dissidents — new Brno exhibition tells the story | Radio Prague International \nBishop’s Courtyard\, Marble Hall \nOpening hours  \nWednesday to Friday 9am -5pm \nSaturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 1-5pm \n  \nphoto: Vít Pohanka\, Radio Prague International \n

SUMMARY:Fiction from wartime Slovakia
DESCRIPTION:Hatchards Piccadilly is  delighted to welcome Jan Zikmund of Karolinum Press along with translator Julia Sherwood and literary scholar Tim Beasley-Murray for a discussion of Slovak literature and\, in particular\, two recently translated prose works of the mid-20th century: \nThe Hours and the Minutes by Alfonz Bednár translated by David Short \nThe Hours and The Minutes was first published in Bratislava in 1956\, the year of Nikita Khrushchev’s “secret speech”\, in which the Soviet leader formally acknowledged Stalin’s tyranny and opened the way for political reform throughout the Eastern Bloc. Alfonz Bednár was one of the first writers to reject nationalist and communist propaganda. In these five novellas\, Bednár is preoccupied with the insensitive\, even inhuman\, rootless\, and amoral modernity that the war and Communist Party imported into traditional Slovak life\, as well as the rural destruction brought about by modernization and urbanization\, and with it a particular approach to life. \nThe Last Thing by Leopold Lahola translated by Julia Sherwood and Peter Sherwood \nSlovak Jewish writer Leopold Lahola escaped deportation to a concentration camp and fought in the resistance – only to then find himself forced into exile by the post-war communist regime. He emerged from obscurity during the brief thaw of the Prague Spring. The nine stories which make up The Last Thing range from the pre-war rise of fascism and its dangers for the Jewish community through the concentration camps and the partisan fight against the Germans\, concluding in the devastating awareness of all that had been lost and destroyed in the war. It’s a collection that offers not only a compelling read but starkly new perspectives on the tragedy and grandeur of that momentous time in history. \nWe hope you will be able to join us if you can for what promises to be a fascinating evening of discussion! \n  \nTickets £5-10 see Eventbrite booking link below

SUMMARY:Jakub Hrůša and Friends
DESCRIPTION:New Music Director of The Royal Opera Jakub Hrůša leads the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in a rich programme of Czech and Hungarian music. From the hallucinatory orchestral colours of Béla Bartók’s scandalous Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin\, to Antonín Dvořák’s rarely-heard cantata for soloists and chorus\, The Spectre’s Bride\, an evening of extraordinary musical storytelling awaits. Don’t miss this chance to see the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House centre stage in a thrilling programme of concert works. \nTwo macabre musical tales \nShocking\, scandalous\, and a masterclass in orchestration\, Béla Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin created a sensation when it was first performed as a ballet in 1926. A young woman dances in a window\, luring men to a violent death. What begins as a sordid tale of sex and murder turns into something altogether more sinister\, when her final victim demands satisfaction – from beyond the grave…  Arranged in 1928\, this orchestral Suite condenses the ballet’s lurid tale\, stopping short of the story’s bloody consummation\, whilst still retaining the score’s hallucinogenic vividness. \nAntonín Dvořák’s cantata\, The Spectre’s Bride\, tells the macabre tale of a young bride-to-be who is kidnapped by a ghost she believes to be her lover. Composed in 1884\, and based on a poem by Karel Jaromír Erben (whose folktales inspired Dvořák’s much-loved opera\, Rusalka)\, this rarely-performed work for soloists\, chorus and orchestra depicts the bride’s wild ride through a hellish night – but as dawn breaks\, order is restored. Alongside the Royal Opera Chorus\, a trio of Czech soloists (Kateřina Kněžíková and Pavol Kubáň in their Royal Opera debuts\, and Pavel Černoch) bring this spectacular tale to life. \ngeneral booking opens 2 July 2025
