SUMMARY:A Tale of Three Grandmothers: Božena Němcová in her time and ours
DESCRIPTION:Božena Němcová’s  ‘Babička’ is one of the best-loved works of Czech literature. She herself was a prominent figure in 19th-century literary circles and the National Revival despite the disadvantages which she faced as a woman writer and in a troubled personal life. Susan Reynolds will consider the two existing translations into English (1891 and 1962)\, the challenges of preparing a new one\, and changing perceptions of Němcová’s life and work in the 21st century. Susan has recently completed a new translation of Božena Němcová’s ‘Babička’ for Jantar Publishing.\n\nSusan Reynolds was appointed as curator of Czech and Slovak at the British Library in 2004 and now works in its department of Research Services. She has lectured and published on Czech cultural links with France and Germany\, and her publications include translations of Karel Jaromír Erben’s ‘Kytice’ (2013)\, the Adorno-Kracauer correspondence (2020) and a chapter in ‘Racine’s Roman Tragedies’ (2022).\n\n\nThis event will take place in person and will also be livestreamed. \nBCSA members enjoy free entry but registration is essential via Eventbrite. Non-members £10\, full-time students £5. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the BCSA School Support Fund established in 2004 to provide support for English language skills in Czech and Slovak schools and other educational institutions. For more information about our fund\, see https://www.bcsa.co.uk/school-support-fund/ \nLight refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:International Students' Day: why is 17 November important?
DESCRIPTION:Do you know why and how it was decided that International Students’ Day would fall on 17 November? Come and find out about the role Czech students played in establishing International Students’ Day\, the importance of 17 November for Czechs and the world in the past and today. \nThe debate will start with a short history video created by Dr George Scott entitled “Not Forgotten” about the student protest in Prague on 28th October 1939\, Czechoslovak Independence Day\, following the Nazi occupation of Bohemia and Moravia. Students were rounded up\, over 1\,000 were sent to concentration camps and all Czech universities and colleges were closed. \nFour speakers who will each bring their perspective to the discussion. Dr George Scott will discuss events in 1939 that inspired the establishment of  International Students’ Day. The chair of the Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovaks Gerry Manolas will introduce the work of Central Union of Czechoslovak students in London that was instrumental in establishing this day. Both Dr. Scott and Gerry Manolas are relatives of the founding members of Central Union of Czechoslovak students. Professor Jan Marek will talk about events on 17 November 1989 where he was personally present and Maxim Višnovský will discuss what 17 November means to him and his fellow students\, placing it within the broader historical context. \nDr George Scott is related to General Václav Paleček\, co-founder and president of International Students’ Day. His video is viewed through the involvement of Charles University student\, Max Martischnig\, who subsequently avoided capture and certain death.  \nGerry Manolas is the grand-daughter of Bohuslav (Slava) Šulc\, Secretary General of the Central Union of Czechoslovak Students. Slava was one of the founding members who helped with the declaration of International Students’ Day on November 17th 1940. \nProfessor Jan Marek\, a consultant cardiologist\, has worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) since 2005. He was one of the students who peacefully demonstrated on 17 November 1989 in Prague and suffered a broken arm from the police.   \nMaxim Višnovský is a Czech student of war studies at King’s College London now in his third year. He spent the last year at Keio University in Tokyo as part of his bachelor’s degree. Maxim currently specialises in Russian foreign policy and international security \nThis event is free\, but registration is essential via the Eventbrite link below. It will take place in person and will also be livestreamed. \n We are fundraising for the BCSA School Support Fund so please donate if you can.  \n  \nOur thanks to the Czech Embassy and Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovak Veterans for their support and cooperation.

SUMMARY:‘Son of an enemy of the state’ (Syn nepřitele státu)
DESCRIPTION:This film\, made in 2022\, marked the 70th anniversary of one of the most extensive\, infamous trials in post-war Czechoslovakia. Fourteen accused communist functionaries stood before the Supreme Court in Prague. The court sentenced eleven to death plus forfeiture of their property and loss of civil rights. All defendants waived their right to appeal. After President Klement Gottwald refused their pleas for clemency\, they were executed on 3 December 1952. \nAmong them was Otto Šling. His son\, Karel Šling\, is one of the last direct descendants of any of the eleven executed men. Even at the age of seventy-five\, he does not give the impression of being a happy and equable man. To this day\, Karel (and his children) are coming to terms with the traumas over which he had no influence. \nKarel will be in discussion with Eva Tomanová following a screening of her documentary film in Czech with English subtitles. \nEva Tomanova is a Czech author and director with a background in journalism. For the past 12 years\, she has worked for Czech TV\, Febio\, TV Barrandov and as a director of documentary films and TV programmes.  \n\nThis event will take place in person and also livestreamed. Refreshments will be provided. \nBCSA members enjoy free entry but registration is essential. See Eventbrite link below. \nNon-members £10\, full-time students £5. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the BCSA School Support Fund established in 2004 to provide English language and other materials for Czech and Slovak schools and other educational institutions.

SUMMARY:Folklore in the postmodern world
DESCRIPTION:Tereza Bušková in discussion with Dr Nicola Baird followed by a video screening of Clipping the Church (2016)\, Hidden Mothers (2021) and Little Queens (2022). \nTereza Bušková is a Czech artist who lives in Birmingham. She celebrates and reinterprets long established customs\, particularly ritual\, tradition and craft\, as carriers of identity and belonging. Tereza works in print\, video\, performance and public art projects\, including staging large-scale participatory events with local communities. \nSlavic rituals are often the starting point for her work but Tereza also researches and explores other European customs which she reinvents with her collaborators. ‘Clipping the Church’ (as in photo) sought to revive an ancient and almost forgotten English tradition. In times past families would flock to encircle local churches\, holding hands with each other to literally surround the church with open arms. In June 2016\, 200 people were present for its re-enactment at St Barnabas Church in Erdington\, Birmingham. \nTereza completed her Fine Art Printmaking MA at the Royal College of Art in 2007. In 2019 she was awarded Arts Council individual artist funding to develop a public art project ‘Hidden Mothers’ and also in 2022 to develop a community art project ‘Little Queens’. \nFor more information see https://www.terezabuskova.com/ \nFree for BCSA subscription members\, non-members £10\, full-time students £5. To register see Eventbrite link below.  \nThe talk follows the BCSA AGM which is open to BCSA subscription members only.

SUMMARY:Special visit to the Maria Bartuszová exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The British Czech and Slovak Association in cooperation with Tate Modern is offering a unique out of hours tour of this exhibition. \nBringing together many works rarely exhibited before in the UK\, this survey exhibition highlights the abstract sculptures of Slovak artist Maria Bartuszová. \nBartuszová worked in relative isolation over three decades in Košice\, the second-largest city in Slovakia. Her artistic life was constrained by the limitations of socialist Czechoslovakia\, as well as financial concerns and the demands of family life. Even so\, she made some 500 sculptures\, from small tactile organic forms and reliefs\, to commissions for public spaces and ephemeral works in the landscape. Her signature material was white plaster\, which lends the perfectly formed sculptures a tentative and fragile quality. \nThe exhibition starts in the 1960s\, when Bartuszová created her own experimental method of casting plaster by hand. Inspired by playing with her young daughter\, she found she could create pure abstract forms by pouring plaster into rubber balloons. She would shape the sculpture by pushing or pulling\, or submerging it into water\, creating uniquely compelling organic shapes. Some are reminiscent of rain-drops\, seeds or eggs. Some suggest the human body\, with maternal or erotic associations. In later works she allowed the balloons to burst\, creating fragile\, ephemeral works akin to cocoons or nests. \nIn the 1980s\, Bartuszová frequently photographed her works outdoors to underline their close affinity to nature. The exhibition also includes a selection of these evocative images alongside her drawings\, many of which will be exhibited for the first time. \nFree for BCSA members\, non-members £10\, full-time students £5. (Tickets for the exhibition are normally £16) \nTo register use the Eventbrite link below

SUMMARY:In the Blood: Anna Fodorova
DESCRIPTION:Czech author Anna Fodorova will be in discussion with writer and literary critic Jude Cook plus readings by actress Lisa Rose. \nIn the Blood is an unforgettable twentieth century family saga set in 1980s London\, Prague and Munich against the backdrop of the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. It explores the impact of history on the personal lives of three generations – a mother\, a daughter and a grandmother. The novel follows Agata\, the only child of Czech/Jewish parents\, who grew up in Prague with the belief that all her relatives perished in the Holocaust. Now living in London with her English husband and their young daughter Lily\, Agata discovers astonishing news: not everyone died. Agata’s decision to look for her surviving relatives quickly turns from excitement to obsession\, but as she gets closer to unearthing long-buried secrets\, her search threatens to tear apart not only the family she already has\, but her own identity too. Drawing on her acute understanding of human psychology\, as well as her own life story\, Anna Fodorova tells a compelling and moving tale of one woman’s search for the truth. As personal and political histories collide\, In the Blood explores grief\, identity\, longing\, family relationships and the long shadow of the horrors of the Holocaust. \nAnna Fodorova  also grew up in post-war Prague in a family without relatives. After a career that began in animation and script writing\, she now lives in the UK and works as a psychotherapist and author\, writing in both English and Czech. Read her interview with Radio Prague here \nThe official book launch will be followed by refreshments and book signing. \nFree admission for members of the BCSA\, £10 for non-members\, full-time students £5 \nBook online with Eventbrite (see link below) \nor by email to bcsa@bcsa.co.uk \nEd Peacock\, editor of the BCS Review writes: I found this a compelling book. I was so drawn into Agata’s search for her relatives\, with its false starts and the continued opposition she encounters\, even from her nearest and dearest. All this against the background of momentous change in Central and Eastern Europe. And there’s some lovely writing: evocative details such as the contents of a cache of children’s toys from years back\, the squalor of a bachelor’s flat\, an English cemetery glimpsed from a car. I finished it in Prague – just the right place to do that! \nIn the Blood will be published by Arachne Press on 27 October 2022 (paperback: £12.00\, e-book: £4) \nOrganised in co-operation with Arachne Press\, the Czech Embassy and Czech Centre London and Lutyens & Rubinstein bookshop. \n

SUMMARY:Anne of Bohemia
DESCRIPTION:Anne of Bohemia\, the eldest daughter of Charles IV\, married King Richard II of England in 1382 at the age of 16 . \nThe speaker will be Dr Shubhankar Reddy\, who will be giving the talk from his home in India\, such is the wonder of Zoom. He is a doctor of medicine who has an interest in history\, and will tell us about this remarkable lady who until her early death joined together the English and Bohemian royal houses. Dr Reddy will also tell us how he has become interested in Anne and in Bohemia. \nAlthough initially unpopular in England (she brought no dowry with her) Anne won people over\, not least by interceding with her husband on several occasions for mercy for people in his disfavour. Unlike many arranged marriages of the period it appears that they came to love each other. \nThe BCSA’s AGM will follow Dr Reddy’s talk\, still on Zoom. The agenda will include the usual items of the Chairman’s annual report\, the Treasurer’s report and accounts for 2021\, and the election of the honorary officers. All members are welcome to attend. \nTo register e-mail bcsa@bcsa.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Czech protest music past & present
DESCRIPTION:An online Zoom talk by Daniel Majer about the political role Czech protest music has played in Czech and Slovak history from the Austro-Hungarian empire until today. \nFollowing the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968\, Karel Kryl composed ‘Bratříčku\, zavírej vrátka’ (Keep the gates closed\, little brother) as his reaction to the occupation. In 1972 the Slovak dissident Ján Ladislav Kalina was given a two-year prison sentence for\, among other things\, playing a record of Kryl’s songs to friends in the privacy of his home. In the eyes of the law during the period of normalization\, that amounted to incitement. \nIn the early 1970s the Czech rock band\, the Plastic People of the Universe\, began using the lyrics of the poet Egon Bondy and other poets for their songs. In 1976 they were sent to prison for up to 18 months for performing at a festival which the court condemned as “an organised disturbance of the peace”.  The group continues to perform despite the death of its founder\, Milan “Mejla” Hlavsa. Their music is the focus of a new book in English ‘ A consumer guide to the Plastic People of the Universe’. \nIn 1989 Czech musicians\, many of them banned from performing or in exile\, played a significant role in toppling the communist regime. In 2007 the Czech daily MFDnes published the results of a poll to name the most important song associated with the Velvet Revolution. Marta Kubišová’s ‘Modlitba pro Martu’ (Prayer for Marta) won by a landslide. \nDaniel Majer\, born in Britain of Czech and Slovak parentage\, will present musical excerpts from Brno where he is studying as part of his course in Czech and Spanish at Bristol University. \nIf  you wish to participate please register with bcsa@bcsa.co.uk by 25 October
