SUMMARY:Echoes of Exile
DESCRIPTION:A Family’s Odyssey through the Holocaust and Cold War \nJoin us for a compelling evening with historian and anthropologist Daniela Grollová Spenser\, as she discusses her new book Echoes of Exile: A Family’s Odyssey through the Holocaust and Cold War. \nBlending personal history with political insight\, Spenser traces three generations of her family across some of the most turbulent chapters of the 20th century: from the devastation of the Holocaust and wartime imprisonment\, through the vibrant intellectual and political life of 1960s Czechoslovakia\, to the trauma of exile after the 1968 Soviet invasion. At the heart of the story are her mother\, translator Ruth Tosková\, and her stepfather\, editor and journalist Vladimír Tosek\, whose lives intertwined with prominent figures such as Jiří Pelikán and the émigré journal Listy. \nThe book—published in Czech by Argo (2025) and in English by the University of Alabama Press (2025)—offers a deeply human perspective on survival\, displacement\, and the shifting relationship between political exiles and Czech society after 1989. \nThe conversation will be chaired by Jana Burešová and will open a window into how private lives intersect with history on a global scale. \nAbout the author:\nDaniela Spenser is a fellow at CIESAS (Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social) in Mexico City. She is also the author of The Impossible Triangle: Mexico\, Soviet Russia\, and the United States in the 1920sand Stumbling Its Way Through Mexico: The Early Years of the Communist International. \nSupported by the BCSA. \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) see booking link below

SUMMARY:The 1938 Runciman Mission to Prague
DESCRIPTION:As Europe faces yet another major crisis only 80 years after the end of World War Two and confronts the threat of war while latter-day dictators set the terms of peace in Ukraine\, it is timely to revisit the role and aim of the Runciman Mission to Prague from 3 August to 16 September 1938. The context then was Hitler’s geo-political ambition and Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement policy to gain ‘peace for our time’. On 30 September 1938 the Munich Agreement ceded Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland to Hitler – ‘O nás bez nás’ [‘about us without us’]. Must history repeat itself? On 15 March 1939 it was followed by the total occupation of Bohemia and Moravia. \nDr Ann Shukman\, granddaughter of William Runciman\, will answer questions received in advance regarding the Mission and her insightful book 44 Days in Prague: The Runciman Mission and the Race to Save Europe published by Hurst & Co. UK in 2024. She will be joined by her daughter\, Clare Ramos\, and her son David Shukman. \nPlease send any questions for Dr. Shukman to events@bcsa.co.uk. \nDr Shukman graduated in Modern Languages from Cambridge and gained a doctorate in Russian Literary theory from Oxford. Her lifelong interests have been Russia and the Christian church. In 1994 she was one of the first women ordained in the Church of England. \nThis event will be held via Zoom only. \nIt is held jointly with the Friends of Czech Heritage (FoCH) www.czechfriends.net \nBCSA and FoCH members enjoy free registration which is essential see booking link below \nNon-members £10\, full-time students £5. Eventbrite fees will be added to the cost of your tickets at checkout. \n  \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the BCSA School Support Fund established in 2004 to provide support for English language skills in Czech and Slovak schools and other educational institutions. SUMMARY:Robert Bruce Lockhart “Best Friend the Czechs Ever Had”
DESCRIPTION:Robert Bruce Lockhart had an extraordinary career. In 1918\, he served as the British Government’s “Agent” in Bolshevik Russia and orchestrated a brazen plot to topple Vladimir Lenin’s regime. The plot’s failure resulted in Lockhart’s imprisonment in the Kremlin before returning to Britain in disgrace. He was subsequently posted to the Prague Legation – the hub of ‘Eastern’ Europe’s post-war reconstruction. \nLockhart was not to know that his arrival in the newly created Czechoslovakia would lead to his enduring affection for the Czech people\, a lifelong friendship with Jan and Tomáš Masaryk and a willingness to defend their country from Nazi and Communist aggression for years to come. \nThis talk explores Lockhart’s service as Britain’s representative to the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile during World War Two\, his work with the Special Operations Executive and the Czech resistance and his attempts\, following the Communist coup of 1948\, to use his gifts as a propagandist and practitioner of psychological warfare to rally the Czechs in the face of Soviet expansionism. \nJames Crossland is a Professor of International History at Liverpool John Moores University\, with a specialism in the history of intelligence\, propaganda and terrorism. His latest book – the product of a decade of research – is Rogue Agent: From Secret Plots to Psychological Warfare\, the Untold Story of Robert Bruce Lockhart (Elliot & Thompson\, 2024). \nThis event will take place in person and will also be livestreamed \nLight refreshments will be served \nBCSA members enjoy free entry but registration is essential. \nNon-members £10\, full-time students £5. \nEventbrite fees will be added to the cost of your tickets at checkout\, see booking link below \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the BCSA School Support Fund established in 2004 to provide support for English language skills in Czech and Slovak schools and other educational institutions. SUMMARY:The Ride of the Kings (Jízda Králů): a folkore festival
DESCRIPTION:This annual tradition held in Vlčnov\, Moravia dates back over 200 years. Its origins are associated with a legend that when King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary fled from King Jiří z Poděbrad of Bohemia\, he wore a girl’s dress\, covered his face with a ribbon\, and held a rose in his mouth so as not to be recognised. The king is played by a young boy\, also with a rose in his mouth and a ribbon around his head\, who enters the village on a white horse. In 2011 it was added to the UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. \nBen Meyer is an Australian/American documentary photographer who has lived in the Czech Republic for the past seven years. During the festival he stayed with members of the king’s entourage and was ‘exposed to an incredibly rich and proud Czech folklore culture’. \nThis event will take place in person and will also be livestreamed. \nBCSA members enjoy free entry but registration is essential. Non-members £10\, full-time students £5. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to the BCSA School Support Fund established in 2004 to provide support for English language skills in Czech and Slovak schools and other educational institutions.
